As it does in many cultures, for me the tree represents family: our ancestors, our immediate family, and those who will come long after us. The location of the viewer relation to the tree - roots, trunk or branches - corresponds to the specific generation; parents, self and children.
A chair represents parenthood, the need to be a place of rest and renewal, and also the need to remain constant and stable, a safe retreat from the weary world. Different chairs sometimes represent a specific person.
The position of the chair makes reference to openness; a chair facing the viewer is welcoming and available. One facing away might imply rejection, being closed off, or may represent discouragement or isolation, especially in context to a wall or window.
Oh, how I love windows! They are a cut out between two worlds; the mortal and the Divine . They represent the portal of prayer, the existence of an unseen but powerful reality, a peek into the workings on the other side of this life.
Roads are the “here and now”, our present days and what lies before and beyond them. I believe we are given what we need in the moment to travel for the next little while in our journey. Frequently, we can’t see beyond the horizon, but we have to trust that the next few miles will reveal the next few miles after that.
As roads do, often my roads sometimes turn. A bend to the left represents a reflection or memory of the past, and a turn to the right, can be seen as looking forward, or a wish for things to turn out “right“.
Pottery is the most challenging art that I do. It’s very physical, and stretches my brain every which way. I consider myself somewhat of a beginner, with only about 20 patchy years under my belt. I am in a constant state of experimentation, forever trying new techniques. I may someday fall into a solid style, but based on my history with other mediums, I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you!
Birds are just cool. They are lovely and intriguing. In particular, I resonate with crows and ravens. Their sleek, mysterious bodies and intelligent minds make them feel so otherworldly to me. Those who know me may have heard me talking to crows, and the crows here in the woods by my house answer my calls, and fly close when I speak to them.
You may also’s occasionally see a chickadee, a sweet little bird, that my great grandfather wrote a nursery song about. As children, my mother sang it to us all. It has come to mean sweet tradition.
“Boxes little boxes and they’re all made out of ticky-tack.”
Houses represent me, or you, the viewer. Sometimes in isolation (but not necessarily lonely), they may symbolize introspection and self observation. In groups, they are family or community, gathered close and giving support. Look for a golden light on in a window, and you may see yourself.
I started making jewelry because I wanted jewelry, and I couldn’t afford the good stuff. Now my work is a fusion of my early days of beading and my work and ceramics.
I hate repetitive tasks, therefore, every piece is unique!
Silks have always been a favorite of mine. I love the way the dye moves, blends, flows and changes as it dries. It’s unpredictable, and sometimes the results are a delightful surprise!
Sometimes I just have to try something new! when I see a new art form or technique, I can’t wait to try it out! Click below to see a collection of textiles and other items in my ongoing experiments.
Be a part of something bigger! I have teamed up with Tortuga Sea to create a line of sea turtle themed merchandise. A portion of every sale goes to save at least 5 baby sea turtles!
Come see how you can save baby sea turtles and support your favorite artist all at once.
